Design Concept for AI-powered gadgets

Recently I found the recent NN/g podcast episode, in which the seasoned design experts, Kate Moran and Tim Neusesser from Nielsen Norman Group, and Henry Modisett from Perplexity AI delved into the topic of generative AI interfaces, AI as a consumer product, and explored the possibilities of this technology and address the AI fear.

It is great to see discussions happening that are helping the community to navigate through this new uncharted territory.

It raises the question of what the future of interactive design would be like and It reminds me of a recent AI design that got my attention - R1 Rabbit.

R1 is a standalone AI-powered gadget designed to do almost anything for you. Running on the LAM, Rabbit trained its model on how to use existing apps for you. It was sold out multiple times in days after its release at CES 2024.

I think It is a good example of how AI is moving away from the status quo, and expands the ways we interact with our devices.

Because of that, I have taken on this self-challenge of designing for a device like R1.

While it is just a concept design, I think exploring the possibilities of designing for AI is a valuable exercise. Moreover, Perplexity's Head of Design Henry Modisett pointed out that with AI product design, we can expect a tailored UI experience for individuals, where the AI model, will pick the right interface to show to the user. It seems like I am heading in the right direction and hopefully, I can validate my design concept at some point once my R1 order gets here. :)

More importantly, it helps me start thinking about design questions more regularly, such as-

Is that an AI gadget that left you a strong impression?

What do you like about it?

How would you design for it?

I hope sharing this design challenge can help you brainstorm for designing AI products.
